Using watercolour to render the four shapes of a cube, sphere, cylinder and cone will cover most of the 3D forms in architecture.

The last shape is the sphere, which is the most difficult. Once again, mix a sufficient amount of colour to cover the whole shape and position your paper so that the underside of the sphere is at the top. Lay a flat wash over the inside of the circle and leave to dry. Next, draw a light pencil line in a curved shape to cover about one third of the cylinder’s surface; lay a flat wash to this line and leave to dry. Next, draw a light pencil line at approximately halfway between the previous curve and the edge of the sphere and lay a flat wash to this line including the cast shadow.

Once these shapes have been mastered using flat washes the reader may wish to use graduated washes, as previously outlined, in order to create a more realistic appearance to each surface. Having achieved a basic mastery in watercolour rendering it is recommended that 2D digital media is considered, which will open up a range of possibilities for exploration and experiment.
